All cooking starts with “mise en place”. The terms is defined as: the gathering and preliminary preparation of the ingredients and equipment to be used in cooking or serving food.
Organization of your kitchen BEFORE you take it upon yourself to prepare a fantastic meal is paramount. Having everything in place and ready to go will make you a more efficient cook, it will keep you organized through out your recipes and will keep the process orderly. After all, who likes a messy kitchen?
Following a few simple rules as you go, will make your experience of cooking not only enjoyable, but leave less of a mess in your wake when the meal is done and someone has to clean the area.
I live by one strict code: buy once cry once. Meaning I do not waste my money on the cheapest crap at the local department store so that I end up having to buy it all over again within a year or two. Buying quality items may cost more up front, but if they outlast you, do you think they may be a good investment, one time? I am not saying to go out an buy the most expensive stuff you can find. Quite the contrary, buy the best you can afford, try to buy quality over quantity and if you have to wait a little longer to buy what you really want, that is the right path. Buying cheapo is not cheap and only the rich can afford to buy things twice.
In my Amazon store I have listed only things that I personally use and vouch for. I am not going to ask you to waste your money on something that doesn’t fit to my standards. I have reviews of some tools and equipment that I think is worthy of your hard earned money and if something doesn’t fit my standards, I will unapologetically tell you it sucks.
Learning the importance of having stock available can be a game changer in how your food comes out. making stock is not difficult, but it takes time. Stocks add flavor as well as change the texture of your food. They are a multi-functional asset in your kitchen. You can make stock and then store it in your freezer until you need it for a very long time. Investing in making a good stock is a paramount skill you should know how to do. You can cheat a bit by buying on-the-shelf stock, but you will still need to modify it a bit to make it good.
As humans it is obvious we cook to stay alive, however the choices we make in this modern age are very different from those in our past. We have accepted the idea of having convenient food in place of quality and healthy food. We have become an overweight, unhealthy and diseased society. The majority of that is our eating habits, plain and simple.
We don’t eat in moderation. Everything nowadays is super sized, excessive and full of processed garbage that may taste good but at what price? Consuming foods like this results in consequences in the form of cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and many other health related problems. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Cooking is a passion. As a cook, you are in a way an artist and the plate is your canvas. You create good quality foods with fresh ingredients (when possible) and produce dishes that should rival what you get eating out.
We are all in a hurry these days. We live in an instant gratification society. This doesn’t serve us and it is not sustainable. We have accepted the lies we tell ourselves as to why we can’t spend a little time cooking good food and the solution is processed or fast food garbage. We accept the excuses. I say “F” your excuses!!! Would you rather live a full active and healthy life or have it cut short because you are too lazy to take a small effort? You owe it to yourself and your family to live the best life you can. It is your right, duty and obligation to be successful.
Presented for you are the 10 Commandments of the Fear of Cooking. Read it, memorize it, live by it and you will be 10 times better off than you are now.
